DOstamper STARS Thursday Challenge No. 223: Moon Baby Quilt

DOSstamperSTARS Thursday Challenge No. 223-sketch pad #crackedpotstamper

Time for the DOstamper STARS Thursday Challenge, this week it is a "Sketch Pad" Challenge.

This week I was inspired by quilts. I saw this sketch and it reminded me of the quilts my grandmother made for each of us.

I love the colors and the sweet little sparkly creatures  on this card. Bunnies and lambs and bears, oh my!

Yes I know the plural for more than one lamb is sheep but that didn't flow as well...so I opted for lambs.

What is a Cracked Pot?

  • What is a "Cracked Pot"
  • What does a "Cracked Pot" have to do with stamping?

These are questions I get asked pretty regularly.

And the answer could be very different depending on whom you ask, as it could have several different meanings.

But here is my reason, please sit back and enjoy the story.

The Cracked Pot: A Story for Anyone Who's Not Quite Perfect

A water bearer in India had two large pots hanging at the ends of a pole that he carried across his neck. One of the pots was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house. The other pot had a crack in it, and by the time it reached its destination, it was only half full. Every day for two years the water bearer delivered only one and one-half pots of water to the master's house.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments-perfect to the end for which it was made. The poor little cracked pot was ashamed of its imperfections and miserable that it could accomplish only half of what it had been designed to do. After two years of what the imperfect pot perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer and said, "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you."

"Why?" asked the bearer, "What are you ashamed of?"

"Well, for these past two years, I have been able to deliver only half a load of water each day because this crack in my side allows water to leak out all the way back to the master's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all this work without getting the full value of your efforts," the pot said.

The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path." Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot noticed the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because half of its load had leaked out once again.

Then the bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path and not on the other pot's side? That's because I've always known about your flaw and took advantage of it by planting flower seeds on your side of the path. Every day as we walked back from the stream, you watered those seeds, and for two years I have picked these beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table. Without you being just what you are, he would not have had this beauty to grace his house."

And that my friend, is why I chose the name Cracked Pot, because we are all "cracked" in one way or another. But despite our flaws and cracks we can accomplish many beautiful and wonderful things, I happen to use my gifts to make others happy with a few simple tools of ink, paper and stamps. I hope that you remember this story and use your talents accordingly because the most beautiful things in life often come from the broken pieces.

DOstamper STARS Thursday Challenge #221: Basket Builder Framelits-Love My Peeps

DOstamperSTARS Thursday Challenge #221

Time for the DOstamper STARS Thursday Challenge, this week it is a "Home Sweet Home" Challenge.

This picture reminds of one of the many things that I love about the Easter season...

C-A-N-D-Y!!

  • marshmallow bunnies (but they have to be a little stale and crunchy)
  • mini robin's eggs
  • chocolate eggs
  • chocolate bunnies
  • pretty much anything that is chocolatey or pastel colored.

Love My Peeps Basket Builder Framelits card created by Dawn Thomas for DSC#221 #crackedpotstamper

I love the colors and glimmer included on this card.

What did I use to create this beauty? (scroll down to bottom for complete supply list and links)

Stamp Set: Sunshine Sayings and Hardwood

Paper: Sale-a-Bration Glimmer Paper Assortment Pack, Succulent Garden Designer Series Paper, Sweet Sugarplum, Tip Top Taupe, Whisper White

Ink: Tip Top Taupe

Accessories: Basket Builder Framelits, Sunshine Wishes Thinlits, Layering Oval Framelits, Stitched Shapes Framelits, Burlap Ribbon

It's All in the Details: the fantastic thing about this card is that there is very little stamping...it is mostly layering images that have been die cut.

  • The Hardwood background was stamped off once - to create a subtle image
  • The Designer Series Paper was cut on the diagonal to give the gingham a different look. And I like it!
  • I die cut the word love four times (3 from whisper white plus 1 from Sweet Sugarplum), adhered them together with the Fine-Tip Glue pen AND then added a thick layer of glue on top of the Sweet Sugarplum layer to give it an embossed and glossy look.

BTW, if you don't have the catalog and you want one, please leave me a comment and I will mail one out to you.

Glossary of Acronyms and Frequently Used Terms

What in the world does that mean?

How often have you seen an acronym and thought to yourself, I have no idea what those letters mean.

Below is a list of acronyms, abbreviations and terms that may be unfamiliar-I hope you find this list helpful.

I've also included the coordinating Stampin' Up! item number in parenthesis.

Glossary

A1 (card size): 3-1/2" x 4-7/8" - commonly used for notecards

A2 (card size): 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" - commonly used for standard greeting card.

A6 (card size): 4-1/2" x 6-1/4"

A7 (card size): 5" x 7"

#10 (card size): 4-1/8" x 9-1/2" - standard business size envelope

Acid-Free Paper - paper with a neutral pH level, important because it extends the life expectancy of the paper and it will not harm photographs that are attached to it (i.e. scrapbooks).  All paper from Stampin' Up! is acid-free and lignin free.

Adhesive - a substance that causes two surfaces to stick together. Stampin' Up! offers a wide variety including permanent, glue dots, tear and tape, fine-tip glue pen, multi-purpose liquid glue, foam adhesives to add dimension

Adhesive Remover (#103684) - removes unsightly adhesive from unwanted areas, works like an eraser

Big Shot (#143263) - portable, manual, multipurpose die-cutting system that you can use to quickly and easily create die-cut or embossed shapes, envelopes, tags, and 3D items.

Blender Pen (#102845) - Combine the flexibility of watercolors with the convenience of markers. These dual-tipped pens are filled with specialized solution to blend ink easily. Use with Watercolor Paper or Shimmery White Card Stock and Classic Stampin' Ink. The tip cleans off with just a stroke or two on scrap paper, so you don't need a different pen for each color.

Bone Folder (#102300) - Tool used to easily score and make crisp folds on paper and cardstock. Scores, burnishes, and distresses paper.

Brayering - technique used to apply ink to a surface using a rubber or sponge roller (brayer #141714) to create background effects.

Card Stock (CS) - is thicker than standard writing paper, but it's not as thick as poster board and cardboard. Use this paper for crafts, postcards, business and greeting cards and even homemade playing cards. Stampin' Up!'s card stock is high quality, dyed with pure color all the way through, available in various colors that coordinate perfectly with the Designer Series Papers, ink and markers. All Stampin' Up! card stock is a sturdy 80-lb. weight, acid free and lignin free.

CASE - Copy And Share Everything or Copy And Selectively Edit

CAS - Clean And Simple

Die-cutting: cutting out shapes using a metal die on card stock, with the use of a die-cutting machine. The machine places pressure onto the die which in turn cuts the paper. Stampin' Up!'s Big Shot die-cutting machine and accessories are "must have" tools, in my opinion.

DSP - Designer Series Paper

Dry Embossing - creating a raised or textured shape, motif, pattern or greeting on paper.  This technique can be done by hand with a stencil and stylus or with an embossing folder.

Fussy Cutting - cutting out an image by hand using paper snips (#103579). TIP: turn the paper not the snips while using long slow cuts.

Heat Embossing - creating a raised design with stamped images that have been sprinkled with embossing powder and heated using a heat tool. The outcome is a raised image that is generally glossy looking.

Rule of Thirds – a guideline which applies to the composition of visual images. FIND AN EXPLANATION AND GRAPHIC

TIEF – Textured Impressions Embossing Folder

Bundle – Stampin’ Up! offers coordinating products at a discount

Stamping Off – Inking a stamp, then stamping on a scratch piece of paper before stamping on your project. This gives lighter ink coverage on your project.
